Tips and Tricks for WFH (Winning from Home)

As COVID-19 continues to rear its ugly head, huge segments of the global workforce have started working from home. While many of us have plenty of experience working remotely, the WFH dynamic shifts a bit when it’s for an extended period of time, when our family is around, or when you’re not able to escape to a coffee shop for a change of scenery. Below are a few guidelines to consider over the coming days/weeks.

  • Maintain Your Typical Hours and Take Breaks
    Having clear guidelines for when to work and when to call it a day helps maintain work-life balance while working remotely. Also don’t skimp on taking breaks throughout the day, especially around lunchtime.

  • Over-Communicate
    Tell everyone who needs to know about your schedule and availability often. When you finish a project or important task, say so. Over-communication helps ensure that everyone on the team is confident that each team member is productive and working in the same direction, but it has an additional byproduct, collaboration, and productivity increases.

  • Set Ground Rules For the People in Your Space
    Set ground rules with other people in your home or who share your space for when you work. If you have children who come home from school while you’re still working, provide clear rules about what they can and cannot do during that time.

  • Human-to-Human Communication is Essential
    Human beings feel more connected when we can see each other, and regular phone conferences may not be enough. Video conferencing helps convey nonverbal communication, eye contact, body language, and encourages people to be more present during conversations by cutting down on multitasking.
  • Video Conferencing DOs and DON’Ts:
    • Lights, Cameras
      • DO: Turn on overhead lights or sit near a light source. Make sure the light is in front of you, so it points toward your face. Position your camera so that it points straight at you and you fill most of the frame. Nobody wants to stare at your ceiling, your wall, or your lap.
      • DON’T: Don’t sit in front of a window or with your back to a light source, or the light behind you will create a silhouette. Don’t wait until the call starts to adjust your camera.
    • Video & Animation
      • DO: Remember that not everyone’s connections are the same, and you can’t do all the same things you could do in person. Email videos in advance and allow time for everyone to watch them on the call.
      • DON’T: Don’t assume that complex animations, gifs, or videos in decks will play back in real time on the other end.
    • Distractions & Clutter
      • DO: Sit with your back to a plain, uncluttered area like a blank wall or clean room. Set aside a quiet space to take calls and be sure to let others at home know your plans.
      • DON’T: Don’t forget to check your area for inappropriate items, clutter, pets, partners, and children. Make a plan in advance, and don’t assume others will know when to be quiet and not walk through the shot in their PJs or bring you their favorite toy.
