Have you heard the one about the ad tech tax?

Over the past week the “I have a joke” snowclone took over Twitter and it’s been a welcome respite from some of the heavier topics that have been trending lately.
It started like this…

And then quickly blossomed…

And perhaps my favorite…

Of course it didn’t take long for marketers to co-opt the trend…

And then Scott Brinker, Chief Martec himself, weighed in…

To which I replied…

But I’m not here to recap a Twitter thread. I just want to unpack the #MarTechTax hashtag that Scott called me out on.

The idea of a tax existing in the marketing and advertising technology ecosystem is one we’ve talked a lot about

And it’s one we’re committed to reducing as part of the Mediaocean/4C combination…

As I shared with Street Fight, “The combination of Mediaocean and 4C helps both buyers and sellers by removing the added friction and inflated margins running rampant through the media supply chain.”

Paraphrasing the Blues Brothers, when it comes to doing away with ad tech tax, you could say we’re on a mission from god. Pair it with the photoshop handiwork of Terry Kawaja and the joke is truly on us…
